Frequently asked questions
Pingit is a mobile payment service that lets you send and receive money using just your mobile phone number. If you are aged 16 or over all you need is the Pingit app, a UK bank account* and a UK registered mobile phone number*. It's powered by Barclays, but you don't need to be a Barclays account holder to use Pingit. It's quick, free and totally secure
Pingit is available on iOS, Android and Windows phone. To download go to the App Store, Google Play or the Windows App Store and follow the onscreen download instructions.
To be eligible for Pingit, you need:
- To be aged 16 or older
- A current account with a UK bank*
- A valid UK mobile phone number*
You can use Pingit even if you don't bank with Barclays. We'll set up a Pingit Account for you to use. You can pay money into this at a Barclays branch, transfer money to it from your UK current account or use any UK Barclays cash machine. In some cases, we might ask you to confirm your identity by visiting a Barclays branch.
Pingit is so safe that the British Standards Institute (BSI) has awarded it the international ISO 27001 certification for security and resilience.
When you use it, you're automatically protected by our Mobile Banking Guarantee. This means we'll refund any money that is taken from your account if you're an innocent victim of fraud. Your Pingit passcode protects your app, which you must enter every time you open the app. Make sure that you don't store this passcode on your phone or write it down anywhere.
If you suspect a Barclays Pingit payment has been made from your account without your say-so, call us immediately on 0333 200 1012†.

Unless you're a Barclays Business customer on certain tariffs, you can download and use Pingit for free. Barclays Business customer's should speak to their Barclays Business Team to find out if they'll be charged for using Pingit.
Although we won't charge you to send or receive money using Pingit, you might have to pay charges if, for example, you make a payment that takes you into your overdraft. These are standard charges you get with any payment method.
We also won't charge either the sender or receiver for any Pingit texts, but your mobile network provider might charge you for data usage or if you receive a text while you're abroad or roaming.
Just download the Pingit app from your phone's app store and follow the on-screen instructions.
We'll text a verification code to your mobile, which you'll need to enter in the app to confirm your mobile number.
We'll also send a penny payment to your bank account with a reference number attached, which you'll need to enter in the app to confirm your bank details. Just look at your bank statement to find the penny payment and reference number.
Once you've confirmed your number with the mobile verification code, and your bank account with the penny payment reference, your Pingit registration will be complete. You can start using the app straightaway.

† Lines are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Calls to 03 numbers are charged at a local rate – they cost the same as 01/02 prefix numbers.
If we don't hold enough information on our systems to complete your registration, we'll need to see you in person at any of our branches with two forms of ID and proof of address.
Please call us on 0333 200 1012† to book an appointment and confirm the forms of ID you'll need to bring.
Yes, if they're registered for the Paym service. You just need to enter their mobile number to make a payment to them.
Even if they're not registered for Paym, or Pingit, you can still make a payment to them – you can either do this by paying their mobile number or directly to their bank account.
Pay to mobile number – they'll need to register for the app in order to receive it.
Once you've sent a payment via Pingit, the person will receive a text message to say it's waiting for them. They'll then have 7 days to register for Pingit, when sending the payment.
Don't worry – if they don't register in time, the money won't leave your account. If you decide that you want to pay them in a different way, you can cancel the payment in app.
Pay to bank account – you can also pay directly into their bank account, if you're a Barclays customer. All you need is their sort code and account number and your linked debit card. The payment will be immediately sent into their bank account.
You should call us straight away on 0333 200 1012†.
If the money's been paid to someone with a Barclays current account, we'll try to take the payment from their account and return it to you. If the payment was to someone who holds their account with another bank, we'll do our best to recall the payment but we can't guarantee that you'll get your money back.
This is why we recommend that you be very careful when entering the details of people you want to send money to – we aren't responsible if you send it to the wrong person. Each time you make a payment with Pingit, you'll see a confirmation page before your payment is sent, so there's a chance to double-check the details before you confirm.

If you're a Barclays customer, your Pingit account is the same as your current account. So, you can transfer money to it in the same way you'd normally make a payment to your current account – online, over the phone, in a branch or by using a Barclays cash machine.
If you're not a Barclays customer, you can transfer money to your Pingit account from your debit card by securely registering your card details in the app and then transferring money whenever you want to.
You can check your Pingit account balance on the 'Accounts' screen in the app.
Call us straightaway on 0800 400 100† and quote ‘Pingit’, and we'll disable your Pingit account or Barclays Mobile Banking account as a precaution. If the phone isn't found, you'll have to re-register for the app on your new phone.

To change any of these details in your app, you'll need to de-register then re-register using your new details. You can do this in the app. Go to 'Settings', choose the details you'd like to change and then follow the on-screen instructions.
If you're changing or upgrading from one iPhone to another, and keeping your phone number, you can restore your registration on the new phone without having to re-register. Just open the app on your old phone and go to 'Settings', select 'Change my device' and follow the on-screen instructions. The first time you run Pingit on a new iPhone, you'll be asked whether you want to restore your registration.
Yes, they'e exactly the same service. We're always looking to improve Pingit so we've given the app a facelift, made some tweaks to the service and launched a new website.
Pingit is still run and owned by Barclays but we've just changed the name to make it simpler.
Pingit is currently available on Android 4.4.2 and above and iOS 9.3 and above.
Paym is a service set up by UK banks and building societies to enable customers to receive payments using mobile numbers. You can pay customers of certain banks and building societies using their mobile numbers. They can also pay you on your mobile if you register for Paym.
As with Pingit, you can register just to receive payments. If you already use Pingit, open the app and you'll be prompted to join Paym. If not, just download the Pingit app to join. You can change your settings at any time in the side menu.
It depends on what account you've linked to Pingit and if you're registered for our Mobile Banking app.
If you've linked a Barclays current account and you have our Mobile Banking app, you can just download the Pingit app again, select 'I am a Barclays customer' when prompted and enter your Mobile Banking passcode to access Pingit.
If you haven't linked a Barclays account, or you haven't registered for our Mobile Banking app, you'll have to download Pingit and re-register. Please ensure you enter the same mobile phone number and bank details as your original registration.
There are daily limits on the amount of money you can send and receive. The amount depends on which type of bank account you have, how you're paying (e.g. by mobile number, short code, etc) and whether you bank with Barclays or not. You can generally pay a person up to £2000 and a business or charity up to £15000 per day from a personal current account. And this rises even further if you've registered with a joint account.
Barclays business account holders can pay a person up to £4000, but non-Barclays account holders can receive money only.
The amount you can receive varies from £5000 to unlimited, depending on your circumstances.
You can see a full breakdown of the daily limits here.
We can estimate how long a payment will take, but we can't guarantee it. How long the payment will take depends on whether the person you're paying is registered with Pingit or Paym.
If you're paying someone who is registered with Pingit, they'll usually get your payment straight away. But there are some exceptions, for instance:
Payments to Barclays current account holders can be delayed if the person you're paying is using the Pingit website instead of the Pingit app; or
Their Pingit registration status is 'deferred' or 'deferred locked' (which means they still need to complete the registration process).
If you're paying someone who is registered with Paym and not Pingit, and they're a UK current account holder who can be paid using Faster Payments, payments usually take no longer than 30 minutes. However, it could take longer – sometimes up to 24 hours.
If you're a Barclays customer paying someone by bank details that isn't registered with either Pingit or Paym:
If the recipient is a UK Barclays current account holder the payment will be transferred immediately
If the recipient is a UK current account holder the payment will be transferred using Faster Payments, taking no longer than 30 minutes. However, it could take longer – sometimes up to 24 hours.
Payments can only be made if there are funds available in your account
If you're paying someone by mobile that isn't registered with either Pingit or Paym:
Once the payment has been initiated, the recipient needs to register for Pingit within 7 days
Once the recipient has registered, they'll get their payment according to the timescales for registered Pingit users (see above)
If the recipient doesn't register in time, the payment won't be made and the instruction will be cancelled
If the payment is initiated, but the recipient then chooses to register for Paym and not Pingit, the payment won't be made and the instruction will be cancelled
If the recipient chooses to cancel the payment from within the Pingit app, the payment will be cancelled and the recipient will notified by text message
Payments can only be made if there are funds available in your account when the recipient registers for Pingit
We sometimes need to carry out extra checks on payments to help protect against fraud – this can delay payments.
If you have a Barclays Business account, you can create, manage and send invoices for free with Pingit.
